Let me be honest with you. When I tell families I want to drive 40 minutes outside the city for their session, I usually get the same look as a DFW Family Photographer. The one that says “you want me to do WHAT with three kids in the car?”
I get it. You’re picturing chaos.
But as a DFW family photographer who’s spent years perfecting this craft, I need you to understand something important: there’s a massive difference between a pretty photo and a gallery that takes your breath away.
And that difference? It often lives about 30 to 40 minutes outside your comfort zone.
Nothing, actually. That tree is lovely. The problem isn’t the tree itself.
The problem is that everyone has that same tree.
When you book a professional family session, you’re not just paying for someone to click a button. You’re investing in art for your walls, legacy images for your children, and a visual story of who your family is right now in this moment.
And here’s the truth: a single backdrop, no matter how pretty, can’t tell a complete story.

Think about the last time you scrolled through someone’s family photos and couldn’t look away. I’m willing to bet those images had one thing in common: visual variety.
A stunning gallery isn’t 40 photos of your family standing in slightly different poses against the same background. That’s repetitive. That’s one-note.
A gallery that makes people stop scrolling has dimension. It has layers. It has moments that feel completely different from each other while still feeling cohesively “you.”
Wide open spaces where your kids can run and be captured from a distance, making them look small against a big Texas sky.
Intimate forest settings where dappled light filters through trees and creates a completely different mood, softer and more romantic.
Architectural elements like old barns, stone walls, or weathered fences that add texture and character.
Water features that bring reflection, movement, and a sense of calm to certain images.
Elevated viewpoints that let us capture your family from above, showing the gorgeous landscape you’re part of.
When we travel to locations that offer this kind of variety, I can create 5 or 6 distinctly different “looks” within a single session. Your gallery becomes a visual journey, not a slideshow.

You might be thinking “but there are nice parks 15 minutes from my house.” And you’re right. There are.
But here’s what I’ve noticed over hundreds of sessions: those closer spots are often smaller, more developed, and see heavier traffic. We’re competing with joggers, other photo sessions, and the familiarity your kids have with the space.
When we drive 30 to 40 minutes out, we’re typically arriving at:
Larger properties with more space to roam and more options to choose from
Less crowded locations meaning fewer distractions and more freedom
More dramatic natural features because we’re getting into less developed areas
Better light because there’s less urban light pollution and more open sky
Unique characteristics that your friends and neighbors won’t have in their photos
The driving time is proportional to the visual payoff. That extra 20 minutes gets you from “nice” to “incredible.”

Let me walk you through what happens when we stay in one spot versus when we work a diverse location.
You get 40 beautiful photos of your family. Everyone looks great. The tree is pretty. The light is nice. But when you look through the gallery, your eye gets tired. Photo 15 starts to feel like photo 3. By photo 30, you’re just looking at different poses, not different moments.
When you hire a DFW family photographer, you’re not just paying for their time and talent. You’re paying for their knowledge of WHERE to take you to create something exceptional.
I’ve spent years exploring locations around the metroplex. I know where the light is best at 5:30 pm in October. I know which spots have the most variety packed into a small area. I know where we can get six different looks without making your kids walk more than a quarter mile.
That knowledge is part of what you’re investing in.
When I suggest traveling 40 minutes, it’s not random. It’s because I know what that specific location will give your family that nowhere closer can provide.

I know what you’re thinking. “This all sounds great, but you don’t know MY three year old.”
Fair point. So let’s talk strategy.
Tell your kids we’re going on an adventure to a place they’ve never been. Let them be excited about the destination, not just endure it for photos.
Book your session so the drive happens during a good time of day for your kids. After rest time, before dinner, when they’re generally pleasant humans.
Tablets, audiobooks, favorite music. Use the drive time to get everyone in a good mood, not to stress about arrival.
Plan to arrive 10 minutes early so no one feels rushed. Let kids stretch their legs and explore a bit before we start shooting. A little freedom at the beginning makes them more cooperative during the session.
I’ve done this with countless families. Babies, toddlers, kids with special needs, teenagers who claimed they’d hate it. The vast majority end up having a great time because the location itself becomes part of the fun.

Look, I’m not going to tell you that every family needs to travel far for great photos. Sometimes staying closer makes more sense:
If you have a newborn and multiple young children, closer might be smarter.
If weather is unpredictable and we need flexible backup options.
If you have mobility concerns that make walking longer distances challenging.
If there’s a location 15 minutes away that truly offers great variety.
A good photographer will assess your specific situation and make an honest recommendation. But if you’re physically able and your kids are decent travelers, I’m going to push you toward those special locations. Because I want you to have extraordinary, not just nice.
If you’re willing to trust me with your family’s story and make the drive for something truly special, let’s talk. I promise the journey will be worth it.
Because the best galleries aren’t created in the easiest locations. They’re created in the right ones. Let’s get started on something extraordinary.
telling your FAMILY, MATERNITY, MOTHERHOOD, AND NEWBORN story through colorful imagery. Serving mckinney, plano, frisco, allen, flower mound, Dallas-fort worth metroplex and beyond.
