I get asked all the time what the difference is between a full session and a mini session. People worry that “mini” means less meaningful, or that we’ll have to rush through and miss the good stuff. But as a Dallas family photographer who’s been capturing families for years, I can tell you with complete confidence: mini sessions are where some of my favorite images come from.
Think of a mini session as the highlight reel of a full session. We’ve got about 30 minutes together, and I promise you, that’s all we need. I work fast, I know exactly what I’m looking for, and I’m really, really good at making your kids forget there’s even a camera around.
Here’s how it usually goes down:

We meet at the designated location (Throughout the year I have various setups based off of season, holiday, etc), and you may be a little nervous; Your kids might be bouncing off the walls or clinging to your leg–all of that is completely normal and exactly what I expect.
We’ll ease into some light direction. I say “light” because I’m not going to put you in awkward, stiff poses. Instead, I’ll give you things to do; “Walk toward me holding hands.” “Tell your son the silliest joke you know.” “Everyone try to make mom laugh.”
This is where the magic happens–when people are doing something, they forget to be weird about being photographed. Their real expressions come out. The laughs are genuine. The connections are authentic.

One of the biggest misconceptions about mini sessions is that we’re just clicking away rapidly and hoping something good happens. That couldn’t be further from the truth.
Yes, I’m working efficiently. But I’m also incredibly intentional about what I’m capturing. Every mini session follows a flow that ensures we get variety in your gallery—close-ups and wide shots, the whole family together and individual portraits, candid moments and a few where everyone’s actually looking at the camera (miracles do happen).
I’m watching for those in-between moments that tell the real story; The way your daughter reaches for your hand without thinking about it. How your son looks up at his dad with total admiration.
The belly laugh that happens when someone makes a silly face–your toddler’s concentration face when they’re examining a leaf. These are the moments that matter.
I’m a storytelling photographer through and through. That doesn’t change just because we’re working in a shorter timeframe. You’re still going to get a gallery that feels like you—not stiff, not forced, not like every other family photo you’ve ever seen.
Your gallery will show your family’s personality–If you’re silly and loud, that’s what we’re capturing. If you’re quiet and sweet, that’s what will shine through. If your kids are wild and you’re just along for the ride? Perfect, that’s the truth and that’s what we’re documenting.
The difference between a mini and a full session isn’t the story we tell—it’s just how much time we spend telling it. In a full session, we might explore multiple locations, change outfits, get more variety in backgrounds and setups. In a mini, we’re focused and intentional, getting the heart of your story in one beautiful location.
You’ll still walk away with 7 beautiful images that feel complete. Photos where everyone looks like themselves, just having a really good day. Images you’ll actually want to print and hang on your walls, not hide in a folder on your computer.

Absolutely. In fact, some of my favorite mini sessions are with families who have multiple children. Here’s why it works:
When you have several kids, full sessions can sometimes actually be harder. You’re asking multiple children to maintain focus and good behavior for an extended period–someone inevitably gets tired, hangry, or just done with the whole situation.
With a mini, we’re in and out before things can go sideways. I know how to work quickly with sibling groups—getting the full family shots first (when everyone’s freshest), then breaking into smaller combinations, then finishing with individuals if time allows.
And honestly? Thirty minutes of your kids being cooperative beats an hour of trying to wrangle increasingly cranky children any day of the week.

Location: As your Dallas family photographer, I choose all locations for mini sessions. These are spots around Dallas that I know have beautiful light, great backgrounds, and work well for the time of day we’re shooting. You don’t have to stress about finding the perfect place—that’s my job.
Timing: Mini sessions are typically offered during golden hour (that gorgeous light right before sunset) or in the early morning. This isn’t just for pretty photos—it’s also when the light is soft and flattering, and when temperatures are more comfortable for everyone.
What to Bring: Snacks and water for the kids if needed. Maybe a backup shirt if someone’s prone to spills. Your phone to keep toddlers happy during sibling shots. But honestly, I’ve got tricks to keep kids engaged, so you might not need any of that.
What Not to Worry About: Perfection. Seriously. Your kids don’t need to be perfectly behaved. You don’t need to look like you stepped out of a magazine. Just show up as yourselves, and I’ll take care of the rest.
Can I be honest? Mini sessions are some of my favorite work; There’s something about the focused energy and quick pace that brings out the best in everyone.
Parents are less stressed because they know it’s not going to be a huge ordeal. Kids cooperate better because we’re not asking them to perform for an hour. And I get to work in that sweet spot where everyone’s still fresh and happy and the light is perfect.
Working as a Dallas family photographer, I’ve seen trends come and go. But the need for real, authentic photos of your family? That never changes. And mini sessions are one of the best ways to make that happen without turning it into a huge production.

I typically offer mini sessions a few times throughout the year, and guess what friends, they go QUICK!
If you’ve been putting off family photos because the thought of wrangling your kids for an hour sounds exhausting, or because you’re not sure you want to invest in a full session yet, a mini session might be exactly what you need.
Quick, fun, stress-free, and you still get the beautiful story-driven images that capture this fleeting moment in your family’s life.
Because here’s the thing: your kids won’t be this little forever. Your family won’t look exactly like this a year from now, or five years from now. These moments are happening right now, and they deserve to be documented.
Not with phone snapshots where someone’s always missing. Not with awkward selfies where everyone’s squished together. But with real, beautiful photos that show your family as you actually are—chaos, love, and all.
So let’s do this. Let’s capture your story in 30 minutes and give you images you’ll treasure for a lifetime.
telling your FAMILY, MATERNITY, MOTHERHOOD, AND NEWBORN story through colorful imagery. Serving mckinney, plano, frisco, allen, flower mound, Dallas-fort worth metroplex and beyond.
